Child care shopping — food & diapers

The time has come to look for child care. Will needs the stimulation and I need to work. So, today Will and I toured a local child care center that is run by the city.

A few things that I was surprised by is that they were not open to cloth diapering but more importantly, they get their food from Sysco I am not sure on the specifics of the offerings this company has but I was told that there are no organic foods and that they use processed foods. Why are we serving sub-par foods to our children? Where ever I end up placing Will in day care I am will work to transition them over to serving healthy foods so that the children will be healthy and happy. When I was growing up, I ate pretty well but too much of the American Diet. When I found out that whole foods make me feel energized and happier I was thankful. I can’t believe how much of my life I was eating crap and feeling crappy. It doesn’t have to be like this. There are options. Just look for them. Make it happen. It is not as hard or expensive as you might thing. If you need ideas feel free to ask me but there are a ton of resources out there and an increasing awareness about this issue.

Don’t settle for sub-par food for yourself or for anyone. If you are addicted to them or just used to them, challenge yourself to make the switch to whole grains and fresh foods. I think you will find you will become addicted to feeling great. Your whole life will improve.

BumGenius Cloth Diapers

Following up on on my last post about “clothies“:

Wow, these diapers are cool. We have had our first day of using the diapers. They look and feel nice. They actually fit our little guy. The Egyptian cotton wipes are so soft and pick up poo like magic! They work way better that disposable wipes.

While it is no fun to get the poo out of the diaper, it is really not a big deal. You already work with poo when you change a diaper and wipe if off your baby’s bottom so what’s one more step? We just wash it down the drain under hot water then go through the thorough laundry steps.

Today when changing Will’s diaper he flatulated while pooing and shot me with it! So, I was wearing his poo on my hand arm and, oh my, my face. Well, if I can wear the poo I can work with cloth diapers.

Also, one can think of it like this: Will came from me and the poo comes from the milk that comes from me… its just the left over bits that his body wont be using. See? Easy. So what are you waiting for? Switch to cloth diapers. Its better on your budget and the landfills. Then there is the process making and transporting them.

Now, let’s see how I feel about it next week :}

Diapers

My boss handed down to Billy and me a bunch of great clothes as well as left over diapers his twins outgrew. The diapers we got from him were Pampers Swaddlers New Baby which were a great size for our little guy. They fit him better than the ones the hospital used.

When Will was discharged from the hospital the nurse sent us home with a nice stash of supplies which included some of those diapers. They were also Pampers but they had a handy blue line that ran down the front of the diaper that changed to the color blue when there is urine in the diaper without having to take it off or stick your nose (or heaven forbid, your finger) in his diaper to see what is actually going on in there. Once we ran out of those I found it took me no time at all to access when a diaper is wet… I can tell most times just by looking at the shape of the diaper.

We nearly ran out of these various free diapers so Billy went to Whole Foods to buy the Seventh Generation Chlorine free diapers for us to try out. He had read reviews that said they leaked and were not well loved so we decided we would try out one package for ourselves before investing in a whole box worth from Amazon.

The reviewers were right! They do leak. We had about 5 failed diapers in our first day and today, day two, we had about 3 or 4 failed diapers. Do not buy the newborn sized Seventh Generation diapers! They DO suck. But word is that the other sizes work just fine. We will use them anyway just to use them up so as not be wasteful. But shame on Seventh Generation for making an inferior diaper! We will however try the other sizes as Will grows into them. I think it is important to use chlorine free products up against our bodies.

We decided to try Whole Foods’ house brand diapers because they were also chlorine free. The size said it would fit 6lbs to 12lbs. Will just recently passed the 6lb mark so we figured we would be able to use these. It turns out that the diaper is huge and would go all the way up to his nipples! Oh dear.

Well, the diaper adventures continue. I hope to turn to cloth diapers with a service that picks them up and sterilizes them. I believe this is the sensible and environmentally responsible thing to do.

I am sure I will have more to say about diapers in the coming months and I hope to learn more from you and others out there in the world what works for them.
